Getting Started with Vanpooling
Step 1:
Register to match with other vanpool riders and drivers. Designate if you would like to be a driver or rider, or both. Vanpools usually have one primary and a few back-up drivers. Primary and back-up drivers have more responsibilities than riders. All riders, including the back-up driver(s), must complete rider agreements.
Step 2:
When you are matched with an adequate number of riders and drivers, Foothill Commuter Services helps start vanpools by:
• Organizing meetings with potential riders
• Advertising empty seats on our Web site
• Offering free magnetic van signs to help recruit riders
• Providing information regarding van leasing
Contact everyone on your matchlist. Once registered with the Foothill Commuter Services, you'll be able to instantly access lists of people who live and work near you and have similar work hours. You'll probably notice at least one person on your list who lives around the corner and works down the street from you, so why not share the ride?
Cover the basics. In making your vanpool arrangements, be sure to get answers to some key questions:
• How often will you vanpool?
• Where will you meet? At home or a mutually-convenient location.
• When will you meet? Work schedules are often more flexible than you think.
Decide the dollars. One of our most frequently asked questions about vanpooling is how much does it cost per person. Vanpoolers usually share the costs of leasing the van, gas, and parking. Your driver will have more information and will discuss these details with you.
Get to know your fellow vanpoolers. Vanpoolers who don't know each other sometimes feel more comfortable meeting prospective vanpool partners before they drive together. You can talk on the phone or even get together for coffee. This is a great opportunity to discuss vanpool specifics.
Establish "rules of the road." Each vanpool is unique, but in all successful vanpools, members agree on topics such as the following:
• Food, coffee, smoking and perfume/cologne usage
• Radio preferences
• How long drivers will wait for delays
Exchange important information and share emergency contact information before starting your vanpool.
Give plenty of notice if you'll be away. Let your vanpool partners know about vacations and personal days well in advance, so they know you’ll be away. If you are taking a sick day or have a personal emergency, notify others right away.
Give it a try. Once you try it, you'll see how much you like it!
